Theft and loss
If you lose your card or if this is stolen, you must block it immediately, calling toll-free number 800 822056 (if calling from Italy), 02 45403768 (if calling from abroad) or the phone number indicated by your bank. Alternatively, you can go to an outlet of the issuing bank which will block the card. Loss or theft must also be reported to the competent Authorities; go to your bank to notify the occurrence.
Unauthorised transfer (and probable cloning of the card)
The most frequent form of attack is cloning of the cards. The scam consists in applying skimmers to ATM, POS or the access door to the self-banking areas. These skimmers are able to read and, at the same time, to copy the information of the magnetic strip of the cards and are often used together with a hidden pin-hole camera to read the user’s PIN or, in some cases, applying a fake keypad. Having obtained the information of the card, the hackers produce a counterfeit card which they use to carry out transactions.
Recently, there has been a considerable improvement in clients’ awareness who, ever more often, inform their bank of any unusual or unfamiliar fixtures applied to ATM, of suspicious behaviour of sales assistants or of unauthorised transactions in their bank statements.
Card owners must check their bank statements frequently (in most cases, this is now possible via Internet) and, if they find any withdrawals or transactions they are sure they have not carried out, block their cards immediately, calling the phone number notified by the bank and contacting this subsequently. The bank will provide all the necessary explanations and initiate any controls.
